For the past 2 weeks we have been reading "Things Fall Apart" in Language Arts , and to get a better understanding of the book I have researched some facts and famous people from Nigeria.
1.Contemporary Nigeria:
-The president of Nigeria is Goodluck Jonathan since 2010.
-There are 140 milliion people that live in Nigeria.
- Nigeria has four major areas that have major ethnic groups inside are:
a. The North- Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri
b. The Southwest- The Yoruba (numerous subgroups)
c. The Southwest (another area)- the Igbo people
d. Niger Delta area- the Kalabari, Ikwerre, Okrika, Ndoni, Abua peoples and many others.
-Nigeria has several interesting instruments such as; the juju, dundun, and the bata.

2. Chinua Achebe:
-born on November 16, 1930 in Ogidi Nigeria.
- his book things fall apart has been translated in over 50 different languages and sold more than 12 million copies.
- in the early 1900s Achebe got into a fatal car accident leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
-he married Christie Chinwe Okoli in 1961
-Achebe died March 21, 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts.

3.Fela Kuti:
-born on October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
-his birth name was "Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti"
-Mr. Kuti started the musical style ,Afrobeat, which became famous in the 1960s.
-Kuti made several songs and albums criticizing the government. One album was "Beasts of No Nation" which criticized Ronald Reagan and other civil leaders.
-Fela Kuti had 27 wives!!

4.Wole Soyinka:
- was born on July 13th 1934 in Abeokuta in Western Nigeria.
-In 1960 Soyinka won the Rockefeller bursary award.
-Soyinka was arrested in 1967 because he was accused conspiring with the Biafra rebels during the civil war in Nigeria.
-His dramas are based of African mythology but is influenced by an Irish writer J.M. Synge.
